Lord Ganesha is the elephant headed son of Shiva and Parvati, considered the guardian of all creation. Worship, in the Hindu tradition, usually begins with an invocation to Lord Ganesha for the removal of obstacles and blessings for journeys and new undertakings. It is said that because of his humorous appearance, acceptance of Ganesha stills the rational mind which is the greatest obstacle on the path of spiritual evolution. Ganesha started off as a human headed child, guarding the door for his mother, Parvati, as she bathed. When Lord Shiva came home from a long absence to see his wife - he was stopped and refused entrance from the boy who was, unbeknownst to him, his very own son. In his rage, Shiva chopped off the boy's head, naturally angering his wife, who asked him to bring the boy back to life. Done with my left hand. |
